Upward Bound program receives United Way grant to boost test readiness
SUNY Fredonia’s Upward Bound program has been awarded a $12,000 Community Investment Fund grant from the United Way of Northern Chautauqua County to expand college preparation workshops for qualified students in five area school districts, Director Loretta Slaton Torain announced.
The workshops, held each month on campus throughout the year, will help prepare students to take the SAT and ACT and improve study skills and test-taking skills – all with the goal of raising scores.
Growth of the program will allow Upward Bound Program to offer additional student success workshops. Staff members are program coordinator Patricia Messina and academic coordinator Matthew Baetzhold
Some 100 students in Dunkirk, Brocton, Ripley, Silver Creek and Chautauqua Lake school districts are currently enrolled in the Upward Bound program.
Torain said the additional student success workshops are very important because of the weight that colleges assign to college prep test scores in their admissions process and the positive effect they have on a student’s ability to be successful in higher education. Eligibility for acceptance into Upward Bound includes being the first generation of a family to attend college, academic potential and desire to pursue higher education.
