Writing Program at Fredonia

Fredonia's Writing program blends critical, professional, and creative writing, and gives students numerous opportunities for hands-on learning through community partnerships and internships. You begin by exploring answers to the question, “What can you do with that?” You’ll learn what writers do and begin developing a process you can take with you. You’ll also learn what career opportunities exist for you, and begin writing your future. Then, combining your imaginative, informative, and persuasive abilities, you will work toward a final publication or presentation of your work, taking your writing out of the classroom and perhaps off the page as you get ready to apply your skills after graduation.

The Fredonia Difference

The Fredonia approach to writing connects creative craft and career readiness. You will develop your storytelling skills both as fiction writers and professional communicators. You will hone your abilities with language for poetic and professional contexts. You will work closely with dedicated faculty who will know your work. Beyond the classroom, our Visiting Writers Series brings in award-winning and nationally recognized writers to share insights on craft and read their own work, while our "Writers@Work" series brings back accomplished alumni who are putting their writing skills in practice across many fields. Internship opportunities let you work for literary presses or roleplaying game companies. You will find a community here among our student-led organizations, like Writers’ Ring and Sigma Tau Delta, as well as by reading, editing, and/or being published in our student-run literary magazine, The Trident. We will help you find your voice, develop your style, share your work, and write your future.

We’ll look at how roleplaying games are constructed, how their rules act as facilitators of both experiences and narratives, and how diverse types of writing are needed to create them. Various types of games will be studied, from simple interactive fiction games to complex rules systems like Dungeons & Dragons. We’ll work together to create rules, build worlds, and share adventures, and we’ll discuss the current state of RPGs as a potential career path for writers. Special guests from those who work in the RPG industry will help us along our path.
