Makayla Mohrman, a senior from Webster, NY, majoring in Social Work, is the Honors Student of the Month for October.
“I have been continually impressed by Makayla's commitment to service, not only to the Social Work program, but also to the larger university and Honors Program,” said Associate Professor Michael Clarkson-Hendrix, who nominated Ms. Mohrman for the designation.
Mohrman, who has dual minors in Psychology and Sociology, has been actively engaged with the Honors Program since her first year, when she began speaking on panels at open houses and supporting recruitment efforts. In her sophomore year, she served as the social media intern for the Honors Program, significantly updating the @fredoniahonors Instagram page as well as supporting weekly email updates.

Since then, Mohrman has remained active while also branching out into many leadership roles across campus. Currently, she is vice president of Rince Irish Dance club, social media manager for The Leader, social media chair for Social Work Club, social media co-chair for the Senior Class Committee and a member of S.T.E.P.S. Additionally, she works as a tour guide and at Willy C’s.
Dr. Clarkson-Hendrix, who serves as director of the Social Work program, indicated that Mohrman also embodies academic achievement in her overall academic performance and has an overall GPA of 3.74.
“Makayla demonstrates academic achievement through her commitment to her work, intellectual curiosity and empathy. She also demonstrates persistence and purposely seeks out opportunities to grow as a student. For example, although not required, she sought out an opportunity to conduct mentored research within her Sociology minor,” Clarkson-Hendrix said.
She is also “flourishing” in her current placement as a social work intern with the Chautauqua County Department of Mental Hygiene (CCDMH), a leader in the provision of behavioral health services in the community.
“Makayla is humble, but also a servant leader within our social work community,” Clarkson-Hendrix said. “Makayla helps make Fredonia a vibrant and distinctive campus community through service that enriches the academic, social and cultural life of the campus community.”
A graduate of Webster Thomas High School, Mohrman has taken advantage of many Honors Program perks — enjoying the distinctive courses, such as HONR 305: Conflicts in Hispanic Cinema with Dr. Juan De Urda, which she says is “my favorite class ever,” and the learning contract opportunities.
She advises current Honors students to take advantage of “the fun classes and the learning contracts because both provide you with opportunities to explore topics and complete credits in ways that you may not have been able to without the Honors Program!”
Mohrman also has enjoyed the campus community, remarking, “Everyone, including professors, are so nice and welcoming!!” She offers a special “shout out to Dr. Gerber and Dr. Clarkson-Hendrix for being amazing supports throughout my four years!” adding, “You both have helped me get to where I am!!”
Mohrman will graduate this spring and plans to start graduate school immediately. Unsurprisingly, she has already been accepted into two advanced standing Master of Social Work programs thus far.
The Honors Student of the Month Program is a collaboration between the Honors Program and the Honors House, which is part of the Office of Residence Life. Students selected by the committee as the Honors Student of the Month receive a gift card from the bookstore and a certificate. In addition, each student’s name will be engraved on a plaque that hangs in the Office of Residence Life.
