Theatre and Dance Mainstage Series features rock musical ‘Hair’

The Department of Theatre and Dance will present five productions as part of the 2014-15 Walter Gloor Mainstage Series – including a work considered to be “the original rock musical.” The series opens in October with six performances of a classic work by William Shakespeare. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” opens Oct. 17 in Marvel Theatre and runs through Oct. 25.

Project alters access to Rockefeller Arts Center and Steele Hall

The ongoing addition and renovation project at Rockefeller Arts Center will impact parking and access to both buildings. Varsity Drive has been closed between Mason Hall and Dods Hall and a new access road has been constructed from Park Drive to the parking lot on the northwest side of the building.

Fredonia alumni and faculty shine at Artie Awards

It was a great night for Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance alumni and faculty at the 24th Annual Artie Awards held on June 2 at the Town Ballroom in Buffalo. The Arties is Buffalo’s annual celebration of its theatre season, a time to acknowledge the contributions of actors, designers and theatre companies in the city, and also a fundraising event for the Erie County Medical Center Immunodeficiency Services.

Fredonia to offer ‘Intensive’ Shakespeare camp for students

The Midsummer Shakespeare Intensive, a unique, all-inclusive overnight camp for students, ages 15 and up, which focuses on the works of William Shakespeare, will be conducted July 20-26 at Fredonia’s College Lodge. Morning studio sessions will focus on acting, voice and movement, while afternoon and evening sessions will be devoted to stage combat, rehearsals and Shakespearean master classes.

Fredonia to host week-long student film production workshop

A casting and crew call is being issued for Action Film Workshops, an introduction to digital media production, that the State University of New York at Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance will host for students, ages 13 and up, at Rockefeller Arts Center from July 28 through Aug. 2. Concerto Competition winners announced

The School of Music has announced the winners of the 2014 Concerto Competition including saxophonist Joseph Bennett, soprano Margaret van Norden and pianist Callen Lange. The event was held Sunday, May 4, in King Concert Hall.

Students and Gershwin tunes featured in annual Commencement Eve Pops concert

The songwriting genius of George and Ira Gershwin will be in the spotlight when Rockefeller Arts Center presents its annual Commencement Eve Pops concert, “Gershwin’s Greatest Hits.” The concert will feature the Little Apple Big Band with eight student singers and four dancers on Friday, May 16 at 7:30 p.m. in King Concert Hall.

Summer music festival slated for high school musicians

The 24th annual Fredonia Summer Music Festival will be held from Sunday, June 29 through Saturday, July 5. Open to wind, brass and percussion students currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12, the festival offers a friendly and relaxed setting for musical growth through performance of large ensemble and chamber music.
