Campus institute will distribute free copies of global warming film

Christine Davis Mantai

The Institute for Research in Science Teaching at SUNY Fredonia has been selected as an educational distributor of An Inconvenient Truth, the 2007 Academy-Award winning documentary film on global warming directed by Davis Guggenheim and presented by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore.

Dr. Michael Jabot, director of the Institute for Research in Science Teaching (IRST) at SUNY Fredonia, said the institute was selected by the Laura David Foundation and Participate.Net based on its educational outreach across the region as well as across New York State. As a result, the IRST will distribute digital video discs of the documentary free of charge to educators who take advantage of its outreach workshops. IRST will be adding outreach activities around the issue of global warming and alternative energy resources to its current offerings dealing with environmental issues, including Project Wild, Project WET and Project Learning Tree.

The Institute for Research in Science Teaching works with pre-college teachers providing leadership in the training of science teachers to use innovative methods in classrooms as well as offering a variety of public-outreach activities. In addition to the areas mentioned above, IRST offers outreach in the physical sciences and astronomy as well as the use of technology in the teaching of science. Educators interested in more information about activities through the Institute for Research in Science Teaching can contact Dr. Jabot at 716-673-3639 or by email.
