Lisa Eikenburg

SUNY Fredonia’s Chinese Club invites the campus and community to celebrate year of the horse on Sunday, Feb. 16. According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the celebration of the year of the horse begins on Friday, Jan. 31 and ends on Friday, Feb. 14.

The dinner will take place in the Multipurpose Room of the William Center at 6 p.m. Student tickets are $6 and general admission is $8. Tickets are available at the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office and online via the ticket office website.

Chinese holiday traditional customs will be introduced, and each person who attends will receive a gift from the Chinese Club after the dinner.

Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival in China, marks the end of the winter season. The festival begins on the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar and ends with the Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day.  Since the Chinese lunar calendar determines the date of the festival, it falls on different dates each year in the Gregorian calendar. The horse is the seventh sign of the Chinese zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs. In Chinese culture, a horse symbolizes loyal, energetic and noble.

This event is sponsored by the Center of Multicultural Affairs and the Fredonia Student Association.

The Chinese Club, acknowledged by the Fredonia Student Association, is a student organization established in 2008 and supports the cultural, social and friendship needs of Chinese students as well as promotes greater awareness and understanding of Chinese culture on Fredonia’s campus and in the larger community
