J-Term course is open for cultural trip to Turkey Jan 6-18

Fredonia, N.Y. — November 17, 2008 —SUNY Fredonia is offering a three-credit J-Term course allowing students to study abroad in Turkey in January 2009. J-Term is the condensed academic session during the month of January offered at SUNY Fredonia.

The Turkey program will take place from January 6-18, 2009 and students, faculty, staff, or members of the community are eligible to enroll. The program fee is $2,200 plus tuition ($697.20), and includes round-trip airfare from New York City to Istanbul, housing, some meals, international ground transportation, excursions and MEDEX insurance. Transportation to New York, passport, additional meals and spending money are not included.

The program, instructed by Dr. Iclal Vanwesenbeeck from the English department, is intended to help students understand a unique culture that brings together East and West, Europe and Asia, Greco-Roman and Ottoman mosques and churches.

Students are invited to explore the sounds, sights and culture of Istanbul, the only city in the world built on two continents. Students will visit early Christian sites, see the Trojan horse, Hagia Sophia and Ottoman art and architecture.

The application deadline is December 1 and the program is approved for financial aid. The course is cross-listed in the spring 2009 course bulletin as INED 299 and ENGL 299.
