Local ninth graders explore higher education

Fredonia welcomed local ninth graders Monday to jump start their interest in college by taking part in numerous pre-college activities.

The students from Dunkirk High School had have the opportunity to meet with representatives from Financial Aid and Admissions. Graduate assistants from the College of Education led interactive sessions, including every aspect of planning a successful transition to college such as navigating college, balancing academics and a social life, striving to be successful and high school planning.

“Dean (Christine) Givner was approached by Dunkirk High School teacher Jillian Domenico looking for a way to introduce college to their top achieving ninth graders. The thought of making a connection between continued success in high school and preparing for college was the inspiration of the collaboration,” said Diane Sercu, coordinator of the Office of Student Services in the College of Education.

“The students who attended are at a point where they are taking the PSAT, and researching career interests, so it is a perfect time to begin the college planning process. In addition, as college searching and planning is taking place, students will be able to take the appropriate high school courses,” she continued.

Students began their day at 8:30 a.m. in the Williams Center followed by campus tours and class visits in Thompson Hall. Their day ended at 1:30 p.m. with answers to prewritten questions from the students about anything in regards to college or Fredonia, specifically. The Teacher Education Club aided in activities and discussions.

Ms. Sercu, in hopes of helping other high school students in preparing for college, said, “We hope that the high school students understand that college is something attainable if they set their sights on the opportunity. After taking part in this leadership training and participating in breakout sessions, we hope that the students develop an initial understanding of preparing for and navigating college.”
