Music profs Piorkowski and Royal join forces for “Art of the Guitar"

Michael Barone

Fresh from their March concert tour of Puerto Rico, School of Music Professors James Piorkowski, guitar, and Susan Royal, Flute, will perform together as part of the Fredonia School of Music Faculty Concert Series in Rosch Recital Hall on March 24, 2009 at 8 p.m as part of the 2009 Art of Guitar Concert Series.

The exhilarating duo has been at the cutting edge of presenting new music for flute and guitar for over two decades, with critics raving about Royal’s “evocatively soaring flute” and Piorkowski’s “typically virtuosic guitar playing.” The duo has premiered and recorded numerous new flute and guitar works, many of which were written specifically for them. Their current program features works dedicated to the duo by William Ortiz and Piorkowski, who is also a critically acclaimed composer.

The performance will feature selections from Dr. Royal’s latest CD entitled “The New Lyric Flute,” which was released on Centaur Records in April 2008.

This concert is part of the 2009 Art of the Guitar Festival, a collaborative event between the SUNY Fredonia School of Music, Ethos New Music Society, and the Fredonia Guitar Society, with additional funding provided by D'Addario Strings.

This year's series, “Composers Alive!” features music written for the guitar by living composers, and will include many world premiere performances. All concerts will take place in the acoustically delightful Rosch Recital Hall, located in Mason Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.
