Professor and Department Chairperson of Mathematical Sciences Nancy Boynton has been elected chairperson of the Special Interest Group on Statistics Education for the Mathematical Association of America.

Special Interests groups are known as SIGMA. SIGMAAs provide MAA members who share common mathematical interests with opportunities to organize and interact professionally. SIGMAA activities include holding meetings, sessions and receptions at MAA meetings, maintaining newsletters, web pages, and list servers, facilitating research and publications, interacting with other MAA organizations, and generally sharing ideas and establishing a network of interested colleagues often from diverse employment settings.

The Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional society that focuses on mathematics accessible at the undergraduate level. Its members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry.

The mission of the MAA is "to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level."
