New bands will battle it out Thursday night for annual competition and concert
The 4th Annual Battle of the New Bands is being held Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. The concert is free and open to all.
The first place prize for the competition is 10 hours of studio recording time at GCR Audio in Buffalo and the second place winner receives a gift basket donated by Cool Little Music Shop in Fredonia.
Judges are Professor of Marketing Shazad Mohammed, Musicology Professor Thomas Bingham, Intellectual Property Attorney Stuart Shapiro, and last year's winning manager Brandon DeJesus.
The audience also has the opportunity to vote for which band they think should win.
According to Tom Graber, vice president of the SUNY Fredonia Music Industry Club, "The premise of the competition is that a handful of students, chosen by the Music Industry Club's executive board, create brand new bands that have never practiced together, let alone played a show, and manage them."
The contest started in early October and, since then, the bands have practiced, written original material, and recorded an original song.
Meanwhile, the managers have promoted their bands. Based on the quality of each band's press kit as well as its recording, the Music Industry Club picked the bands that will now advance to the final show on Nov. 15.
This year there are four bands in the final competition; La Vida Mia (acoustic folk), Boss Tweed (Rock), The Shockers (female rock), and I Thought I was Taller (punk rock).
