Operatic soprano here for SOTA residency this week

This month, SUNY Fredonia will welcome renowned mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer to campus. Professor of Voice at Rice University’s Shepherd School, she will visit SUNY Fredonia Feb. 10-12.
 

The Student Opera Theatre Association at SUNY Fredonia is hosting world renowned and Grammy-nominated mezzo-soprano Susanne Mentzer for classes and performances Friday, Feb. 10 through Sunday, Feb. 12. 

Introduced to opera as a teenage usher at the Santa Fe Opera, Susanne Mentzer is one of today's foremost mezzo-sopranos, recognized for her generous vocal and interpretive gifts, and widely admired for her versatility from the recital and concert stage to the operatic arena. Susanne has appeared with nearly all the major opera companies, orchestras and festivals of North and South America, Europe and Japan. For over 20 years she has sung leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera.

A specialist in trouser roles, she is also noted for her bel canto style, sings many of the French heroines, has a special interest in new works and has premiered two song cycles.

Friday: Feb. 10

Master Class with Susanne Mentzer
4 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall. Free, but tickets are required for admission. Tickets are available at the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office, located in the Temporary Office Complex in the Dods Hall lot.

Fredonia voice students will perform art songs and arias for Susanne Mentzer, mezzo-soprano. Students will work on musicality, artistry and technique as well as performance strategies. Presented by the Student Opera Theatre Association.


Saturday, Feb. 11

Guest Artist Recital by Susanne Mentzer
1 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall; Tickets: $15 general admission / $8 students. Tickets are available at the SUNY Fredonia Ticket Office, located in the Temporary Office Complex in the Dods Hall lot.

Mentzer will perform works by Robert Schumann, Clara Schumann, Enrique Granados and Manuel de Falla. Presented by the Student Opera Theatre Association.


Sunday, Feb. 12
