Science and Technology talk concludes Brown Bag series Wednesday
The Fall 2013 Liberal Arts and Sciences Brown Bag Lecture Series concludes on Wednesday, Dec. 4, with “Science and Technology,” a program which will examine the role of technology in areas of scientific research and some of the impacts of this technology on society. The presentation, moderated by Dr. Michael Jabot, professor of Curriculum and Instruction, will be held at noon in the Williams Center, G103.
Presenters include Dr. Justin Conroy, associate professor of Physics, who will speak on "What Can the Higgs Boson Do for Me?" Conroy will briefly discuss key points about the newly discovered Higgs Boson particle, technology that might come from its discovery, and the general role of fundamental science in the advancement of technology.
Dr. Ann Deakin, associate professor of Geosciences, will present "Geospatial Technology in the K-12 Classroom.” Examples of how geospatial technology, in general, and Esri’s ArcGIS, in particular, are being used in the K-12 setting will be offered, and be followed by discussion on the potential impact these efforts might have on these students as they move into higher education.
Dr. Scott Ferguson, assistant professor of Biology, will present "Biomedical Research in the Post-Genomic Era." He will address the recent rise in next-generation sequencing technologies that have allowed the collection of vast amounts of data about individual genetic variation and its association with susceptibility to disease.
This fall lecture theme, "Digital Futures: Technology's Promises and Perils," has offered monthly informal talks by SUNY Fredonia faculty members. A brief discussion and refreshments follow each 30-minute presentation. The talks are free and open to all campus and community members. Classes are welcome.
This year’s series has been directed by Dr. Jonathan Chausovsky, political science; Dr. Teodora Cox, mathematical sciences; Dr. Jack Croxton, psychology; Dr.Natalie Gerber, English; Dr. Laura Johnson, communication; and Dr. Theodore Lee, biology.
