Scientists focus of Women's History Month

Christine Davis Mantai

Women’s History Month is underway and features a guest lecture Monday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in Jewett Hall 101 by visiting environmental scientist and feminist Dr. Ingrid Bartsch of the University of Southern Florida.

She is what Ingrid Johnston-Robledo (psychology), director of the Fredonia Women’s Studies Program, describes as a “revolutionary woman in the sciences,” one of three who were invited to campus this month.

“I think exposure to feminist faculty in various scientific fields will help students recognize connections between women’s studies and scientific approaches and content,” Dr. Johnston-Robledo said.

Visiting scholars also include Dr. Amy Parish, an anthropologist and primatologist from the University of Southern California, and Dr. Joan Chrisler, a psychologist from Connecticut College. Also planned this month is a faculty panel discussion on abortion, and a Performing Arts Company play based on the “The Yellow Wallpaper,” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in the late 19th century.

Sponsors of Women's History Month made sure they honored women on campus during the opening ceremonies. The honorees were nominated as "campus women revolutionaries."

“It is important to honor the women who continuously work day in and day out to achieve the things that all of the women on our campus do. They are the everyday heroes; the women who are working to make a difference locally,” said Melissa DiMartino, Women Studies Graduate Assistant. “Of course I'm excited for the speakers who will be brought in, but I am also excited to honor the women in our own community who have been just as prolific and hard-working.”

The Closing Ceremonies for Women’s History Month, on March 22 will feature a presentation by the American Association of University Women, and a poet, Alix Olson, co-sponsored with Spectrum Entertainment at 8 p.m. in the Spot Café. Free food will be served.

Women's History Month is co-sponsored by the Women's Studies Program and the Women's Student Union.
