Students needed to volunteer for donation drive

Fredonia, N.Y. — November 7, 2008 — Organizers of the 9th annual Campus-Wide Donation Drive are looking for student volunteers to do the physical work necessary to move the donations from givers to recipients. Last year, the drive collected 25 boxes of toys, 50 boxes of food, and 50 bags of clothing (3,000 gallons), which were sorted and packaged for transport by 67 student volunteers from various student organizations, residence halls and university staff.

On Dec. 5, the volunteers will be sweeping across the SUNY Fredonia campus to gather up donations for the annual holiday event. All items collected will be donated to the local agencies of Rural Ministries and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Youth Organization.

“One of the most important aspects of the donation drive is our large amount of student volunteers,” said Stephanie Wares, the drive’s co-organizer. “We are so grateful for all the campus and community donations and for all those who volunteer to collect donations each year.”

Items sought are non-perishable food items, new or old toys, and new or old (gently used) clothing. Volunteers will be accepting donations in the Williams Center, room G-141/142, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The event is co-sponsored by the SUNY Fredonia counseling center, academic advising, residence life, custodial services, volunteer services, and student affairs. It is being co-organized by Julie Bezek of the counseling center and Stephanie Wares of academic advising.

For more information about specific donations that are in need this year, or to sign up to volunteer, please visit the Counseling Center website  or call Marie at the counseling center at 716-673-3424.
