Students receive honorable mention in global math competition
A team of SUNY Fredonia students including Nicholas Ahlstrom, Christopher Shartrand and John Tucker competed in the 2014 Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM), sponsored by the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications.
The team was recently informed that they received an honorable mention for their work, putting them into the top 42 percent of the participating teams. The three students competed among 6,755 teams worldwide.
The MCM challenges teams of students to clarify, analyze, and propose a solution to one of two open-ended problems. Ahlstrom, Shartrand, and Tucker received their problems at 8:01 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6 and submitted their solutions by 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10.
Mr. Ahlstrom is a junior from Dunkirk, N.Y., majoring in Mathematics with a concentration in Finance and Economics. He is a member of the national honorary mathematics society, Pi Mu Epsilon. Mr. Shartrand is a junior majoring in Applied Mathematics with a concentration in Statistics and Operations Research. He is from Ballston Lake, N.Y., and also is a member of the national honorary mathematics society, Pi Mu Epsilon. Mr. Tucker is a junior, from Derby, N.Y., and is majoring in Physics and Mathematics.
All three students have been chosen by the mathematics faculty to receive a Frank Olson Scholarship for next year. The scholarship recognizes students in the mathematics program who have achieved exceptional academic success.
Associate Professor Lan Cheng is the faculty advisor for SUNY Fredonia's MCM teams.
