Tallis Scholars in concert April 6

Christine Davis Mantai

The Rosch Musical Arts Series celebrates Mozart’s 250th birthday with the April 6 appearance of the 10-voice a cappella ensemble from England, the Tallis Scholars.  The concert begins at 8 p.m.  Fredonia School of Music Professor, Dr. Gerald T. Gray, will give a pre-concert talk at 7pm in Diers Recital Hall. Join us after the concert in a reception with the distinguished guests.  Complimentary parking shuttle will be available.

Peter Phillips, left, will direct the world-famous Tallis Scholars on a U.S. tour this spring.

Audiences will not find another opportunity to see performers of this caliber in such a beautifully intimate and acoustically spectacular venue as Rosch Recital Hall. With just 500 seats, concert-goers will be front and center for these outstanding musical events.  Hearing the Tallis Scholars perform can be a life-changing experience.  Their purity of sound, perfection of intonation, and interpretive sensitivity to the Renaissance literature elicits an emotional response from the listener.  The nearly perfect acoustics of Rosch Recital Hall will complement this ensemble in a way that will move the soul of the listener.

Their program at Fredonia will be “Mozart’s Roots: A Cappella Music in Germany” in honor of Mozart’s 250th birthday.  We will hear the captivating works of Mozart’s predecessors - all music that would have inspired him but are rarely heard today.  This program is likely to be the performance highlight of the year. They will also perform works by  Praetorious, Hassler, Aichinger, Senfl, Schutz, and J.S. Bach.

The Tallis Scholars have established themselves as leading exponents of Renaissance sacred music through world-class recordings and concert performances. Their exploration of the depth and variety of this repertoire has reached a world-wide audience. Peter Phillips has worked with the ensemble to create, through good tuning and blend, the purity and clarity of sound which he feels best serves the Renaissance repertoire, allowing every detail of the musical lines to be heard. It is the resulting beauty of sound for which The Tallis Scholars have become renowned.
