Ten years after Sept 11, Brown Bag series takes a look at America

A series of lunchtime lectures at SUNY Fredonia will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. “America: 10 Years Later” is the theme for the fall Arts and Sciences Brown Bag Series, four talks on new scholarship and creative work presented by university faculty.

The series begins on Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011, with “Who Are We and How Did We Get Here?: U.S. Cultural Identity in a Post 9-11 World.” Presenters include: Ellen Litwicki, Ph.D., American cultural history; Dustin Parsons, M.A., American identity; and, Linda Brigance, Ph.D., rhetoric of cultural memory and identity, who will also moderate the panel. The topic and panel proposed by Dr. Brigance won the “Dream Brown Bag Lecture Competition” held in the spring.

Subsequent lectures will include: “America: The Brand in a Post 9-11 World” on Oct. 5; “America: The Cost of Conflict,” which is part of SUNY Fredonia’s 2011-12 Convocation, on Nov. 2; and, “Are We There Yet?: The Pursuit of Happiness and the American Dream,” co-sponsored by the Fredonia Philosophical Society, on Dec. 7.

All lectures take place between noon and 12:50 p.m. in the Horizon Room in the lower level of the Williams Center. All lectures are free and open to all campus and community members. Classes are welcome.

This year’s series is directed by Teodora Cox, mathematical sciences; Laura Johnson, communication; and, Theodore Lee, biology.
