Women’s History Month celebrated with several events
The Women and Gender Studies Program and Women’s Student Union are sponsoring several events in March and April in observance of Women’s History Month.
On Thursday, March 6, the Women's Student Union will welcome keynote speaker Andi Zeisler, author and co-founder of Bitch magazine. She will discuss feminism, pop culture and media activism at 7 p.m. in McEwen Hall 209. Ms. Zeisler is the author of the book, “Feminism and Pop Culture,” and her work has been featured in numerous periodicals and newspapers including Mother Jones, the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, Ms., the Women’s Review of Books and the San Francisco Chronicle.
A screening of, “The Hunger Games,” co-sponsored with the Fredonia Film Society, is slated for Monday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Fenton Hall Room 153. On Wednesday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. in McEwen Hall Room 209, there will be a film screening and discussion, “Wonder Women! The Untold Stories of American Superheroines.”
In addition, students, faculty and staff are invited to throw away magazines for, “Shed Your Weight Issues Here,” during March. A sizable container is set up in McEwen Hall for people to discard pieces of pop culture that present restrictive, unrealistic and unwanted representations and expectations of beauty in society.
A closing ceremony for Women’s History Month is slated for Wednesday, March 26 at 6 p.m. in the Horizon Room in the Williams Center.
On Friday, April 4, at 4 p.m., in McEwen Hall Room 209, the Women and Gender Studies’ Gender and Social Change Lecture will feature Rosemarie Garland-Thomson, author and professor of women’s studies at Emory University. Her fields of study include feminist theory, American literature and disability studies.
The Women and Gender Studies program will host the 16th Annual Gender Conference to celebrate student research in women’s studies and gender related areas on Wednesday, April 9, at 4 p.m. in the Williams Center Room 204D. The event will feature recipients of “The Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research on Gender,” who will present summaries of their work. The documentary, "Sins Invalid: an Unashamed Claim to Beauty,” will also be shown. The film is a performance project that highlights disability and sexuality.
All events are free and open to the public.
