SPEAKER BIOS
Dr. Athanasia Landis is a medical doctor and the Mayor of Fredonia. She was born in Thessaloniki Greece where she also finished Medical School (Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki) right after she got a degree in Medical Bacteriology. She has residencies in Anesthesiology (Theageneion Cancer Treatment Hospital in Thessaloniki) and Internal Medicine (Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan, Gr. Britain.) She studied English in Cambridge, England, both before and during Med School.
She is the first female mayor of the village of Fredonia and the second born outside the village. Although new to the political arena, she's not new to political thinking as both sides of her family in Greece were involved in politics, and ideas of "serving your fellow-man" and “be able to stand up for yourself” were imbedded into her from very early on. Her mother's side was in Government (her great-uncle had served as Secretary of the Interior) while her father's was in unions (her grandfather was the President of the regional civil workers union for more than 15 years). She has served in a variety of charitable organizations, most recently as Vice President of the Buffalo chapter of Women Philoptochos Association of North America.
She is married to Dr. Andrew J. Landis, also a physician with a local private practice, and they have 5 children; Dimitra, Dimitri, Constantine, Alexandros and Fotini.
Dr. Iclal Vanwesenbeeck is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at State University of New York at Fredonia. She teaches early modern and world literature. She also teaches summer programs in Iceland, and was a Fulbright scholar in Albania in 2016-17.
Dr. Ted Schwalbe is a Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Communication at State University of New York at Fredonia. He teaches courses in Media Management and International Media. He has had Fulbrights in Bulgaria, Hungary, Namibia, and Swaziland and has also been project manager for four major international media training projects funded by the U.S. Department of State.
Paul Chambers attended State University of New York at Fredonia from 2011-2015, receiving a B.M. in Music Education and a M.M. in Percussion Performance. He is currently completing a Fulbright U.S. Student Research Project in South Africa to conduct research on a style of indigenous music known as dinaka.
