14th annual Pi Day to be celebrated March 13
SUNY Fredonia’s Department of Mathematical Sciences is celebrating its 14th annual Pi Day on Thursday, March 13, at 5:30 p.m. in McEwen Hall Room 209.
All are welcome to attend. The year’s theme is ‘Pi’ Perfect.Over a dozen teams will be competing for the math department’s coveted "Pi Cup" and free shirts. The cup is the department’s version of the Stanley Cup. Professor Keary Howard of the department noted, “If you win, your name is marked on it for eternity.”
Team signups are available outside of Fenton Hall Room 222, also known as the “fishbowl,” and is open to students, faculty and staff. Signups will end on March 11.
Teams will audition for a spot in the finals by performing three minute songs, dances, raps, etc., based off of the movie, “Pitch Perfect.” All performances have to be math related. The finals will begin around 7 p.m.
After the competition, there will be food and a screening of, “Pitch Perfect,” in Fenton Hall Room 222 at 7:30 p.m.
Pi Day is Friday, March 14 (3-14, like the first three digits of pi) and SUNY Fredonia's Department of Mathematical Sciences is celebrating one day early. It is a ‘math holiday’ that has been gaining steam over the last decade.
