Fredonia State Athletics’ is participating in Girls in Sports Day on Saturday, Feb. 7.

The community event celebrates the achievements of girls and women in sport through interactive athletic sessions, mentorship, and dialogue — promoting empowerment, inclusion, and leadership while strengthening connections between SUNY Fredonia and the broader Chautauqua County community.

Activities will take place from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Steele Hall Fieldhouse, and students from Fredonia athletic teams will lead activities with area youth.

Fredonia State Athletics is proud to partner with the United Way of Chautauqua County in hosting the event. This ongoing collaboration between Fredonia State Athletics and the United Way of Chautauqua County continues to expand access to sports and physical activity for girls ages 9 to 12 throughout Chautauqua County. The event is made possible through the support of community partners and volunteers, with Fredonia State student-athletes serving as activity leaders and mentors as they guide participants through a variety of sport-based experiences.

Girls in Sports Day aligns with the 39th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day, which is celebrated nationally on Feb. 4. According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, “National Girls and Women in Sports Day recognizes student-athletes, champion athletes, coaches, administrators, and lawmakers committed to providing equitable access to sports for all girls and women.”

There will be a sport sampling of volleyball, tennis, soccer, softball, cheer and lacrosse. As of Jan. 22, local school districts participating include Ripley, Forestville, Chautauqua Lake, Brocton and Dunkirk.

Fredonia State athletic team members participating include women's volleyball, women's tennis, women's soccer, softball, women's cheer and women's lacrosse.

Additional sponsors include the Carnahan Jackson Fund for the Humanities, established through the Fredonia College Foundation, and the Faculty Student Association.
