New scholarship to assist students to pursue study abroad in Portugal

Students interested in studying abroad in Portugal could be awarded up to $5,000 to support a summer or semester experience with a new Gilman-FLAD Portugal Scholarship. If students also study Portuguese, a critical-need language, they can receive an additional $3,000.

A study abroad partnership that SUNY Fredonia has had with the Study in Portugal Network (SiPN) since 2016 allows students to study at one of four top universities in Lisbon, a city easy to navigate without Portuguese language skills, or complete an internship in an area of professional interest. Portuguese language skills are not required for the program.

SiPN offers semester and summer programs in Lisbon and The Azores, Portugal. Course work is taught in English and is available in the following subject areas: business, communication, computer science, engineering, environmental science, literature, film, history, international studies, political science, Portuguese language, psychology, sociology and visual and performing arts.

Students will be enrolled in courses with Portuguese students and students from other countries. Supplemental practical experiences can be obtained through internships and research programs.

The Office of International Education will provide more information on the program and scholarship opportunities at a virtual information session on Wednesday, April 21, at 1 p.m. Only students who are U.S. citizens receiving a Pell grant as part of their financial aid award are eligible for the Gilman-FLAD scholarship. Students can register online for the session.
