President Horvath responds to events in Charlottesville

Dear Members of the Fredonia Community, As many of you did, I followed the events that occurred this weekend at the University of Virginia and the city of Charlottesville with deep concern not only for the safety of the people there but also for the safety and security of people everywhere in our country should such hatred, bigotry, and violence be accepted. I am saddened by the deaths and injuries that resulted and moved, as your president, to make a statement that this is not acceptable. (Click on the headline for the complete statement.)

Fredonia launches Study Abroad program in Hungary

A new Study Abroad program that will transport students to Budapest, the capital of Hungary, and Szeged, the nation’s largest city, beginning in the summer of 2018, has been created by the Office of International Education and the Department of History.

Faculty exchange expands Fredonia, Albanian university connection

A new chapter in the affiliation between Fredonia and Aleksander Xhuvani University has been written with a recent faculty exchange. Dr. Vilma Tafani continued research that she began at the Fredonia campus during the 2001-2002 academic year, while Distinguished Service Professor Ted Schwalbe returned to her school, located in Elbasan, Albania, to work with students and faculty.

Prayer gatherings to be held

Monthly prayer gatherings, hosted by InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, a student organization, and the Newman Center, will be held on the first Friday of each month, beginning Sept. 1, from noon to 12:45 p.m., at Williams Center Room G103B.

Alumnus leads record-breaking hockey marathon to benefit Roswell Park

Mike Lesakowski, ’94, didn’t put up big numbers in his hockey career at Fredonia, but he and his wife, Amy, clearly knocked the puck out of Buffalo’s HarborCenter with the 11 Day Power Play, a noble challenge to break the Guinness World Record for the longest hockey game ever played and raise $1 million for Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Enactus in top 32 schools in the nation

The Fredonia Enactus team returned from the Enactus United States National Exposition held in Kansas City with a trophy in hand representing its placement, once again, in the top 32 schools across the country. The trophy, earned by presenting the outcomes of the year’s 13 projects to business leaders represents recognition of the over 5,800 hours of work on projects.

Faculty, staff receive SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence

Five faculty and staff members whose collective service at Fredonia extends to virtually all parts of the campus have received the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence, a SUNY-wide honor that celebrates consistently superior achievement in a broad range of work areas.

Fredonia students to collect valuable solar eclipse data for NASA

Students majoring in Education will have a unique opportunity to assist NASA by collecting data during the highly anticipated solar eclipse – one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights – on Monday, Aug. 21. Atmospheric conditions, such as the amount of cloud cover and color, as well as atmospheric aerosols (solid particles in the air) will be tracked by 67 pre-service teachers enrolled in Elementary Science Methods (EDU 403), an upper level course for future teachers.

Welcome Week rolls out red carpet to students; Activities Night on Wednesday

What do an ice cream, a popular 3D computer-animated musical fantasy film from Walt Disney Pictures and a block party have in common? They were among a variety of attractions offered during Welcome Week, a popular Fredonia tradition hosted by Spectrum Entertainment Board and sponsored by the Student Association that welcomes students to a new academic year. All events, held during the first week of classes, were free to Fredonia students.
