By melding the roles of artist and cultural historian, Enrique Chagoya has made a name for himself as he creates alternative interpretations of current events. He turns his attention to current socio-political events for the first exhibition of 2018, “Aliens Sans Frontières” (Aliens Without Borders), which opens Jan. 19 in the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery.
The innovative use and versatility of handmade paper as an artistic medium — and some of its of cultural traditions — will be featured when the Cathy and Jesse Marion Arts Gallery hosts “Knowing Paper: Five Contemporary Artists Using Paper as their Expressive Medium,” opening March 2.
Fredonia School of Music piano professor and renowned Bach specialist, Fr. Seán Duggan, will present the complete cycle of J.S. Bach's "The Well-Tempered Clavier" over three consecutive evenings in March in celebration of Bach’s 333rd birthday.
The first senior art exhibition of the spring semester will feature the work of nine graduating majors from the Department of Visual Arts and New Media. Titled “Paraskevidekatriaphobia,” which means fear of Friday the 13th, the exhibition opens in the Cathy and Jesse Marion Art Gallery with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 13.

The Fredonia Wind Ensemble concert, featuring percussionist Valerie Naranjo, is slated for Sunday, April 29 at 4 p.m. in King Concert Hall. Also a vocalist, composer and clinician, Naranjo plays percussion for NBC’s Saturday Night Live Band, and has recorded and performed with the Broadway production of “The Lion King.”
Zuill Bailey, widely considered one of the premier cellists in the world, will be in-residence at the Fredonia School of Music, where he will perform with the Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra and conduct a master class in the School of Music, on March 24.
The School of Music will bring famed Cuban composer/guitarist Leo Brouwer to the Fredonia for a residency on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 13 and 14. A pre-eminent composer for the classical guitar with over 100 commercial recordings, Mr. Brouwer is known for many other compositions, including film scores for "Like Water for Chocolate" and "A Walk in the Clouds."
A master class followed by a recital by internationally recognized British flutist/composer Ian Clarke are slated for Thursday, April 19 at the Fredonia School of Music.
Distinguished American composer John Corigliano will be the special guest of the Western New York Chamber Orchestra on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 4 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. He will also present a master lecture, open to the public.
