Biology students receive awards at Great Lakes Research Conference

Biology research students Cassidy Hahn and Nick Sard received awards at the Great Lakes Research Consortium Annual Conference. The event was held March 13-14 at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

“Influence of Biotic and Abiotic Factors of Walleye Year Class Strength in Lake Erie” submitted by Cassidy Hahn received the best poster award. Cassidy Hahn and Nick Sard received best oral presentation for their research on “Genetic Divergence and Longitudinal Variation of Smallmouth Bass Populations in Lake Erie and its Tributaries.”

The Great Lakes Research Consortium is an organization dedicated to providing research and education on the Great Lakes. It is comprised of 18 colleges and universities in New York and nine affiliated campuses in Ontario with over 400 faculty members. Its annual conference includes student presentations, research planning meetings, faculty panels, and an awards banquet to honor the best student entries and presentations. As such, the conference allows students to showcase their research while presenting a forum for all attendees to gain further insight and knowledge on biology from one another.

The SUNY Fredonia Biology Department offers an undergraduate biology program designed to meet the career goals of students with widely varied interests. Graduates of the program are prepared for entrance into graduate school or professional programs, technical work in education, medical, or environment settings, and professional careers in the public and private sectors.

Dr. Robert Strauss will conduct the Buffalo Gay Men’s Chorus in “ WALK TOGETHER,” a concert to be performed at three sites in May and featuring “Tyler’s Suite,” a nine-song cycle about the life and death of Tyler Clementi, as well as songs from, or about, Buffalo, NY.
