Watch out Hollywood, here come The Guerrillas. The SUNY Fredonia all-male a capella group has been chosen to compete on a nationally televised singing contest called “America Sings,” starting this June.
The new series, which will air on the Gospel Music Channel (GMC), will feature thousands of hopefuls ranging from a variety of musical genres, including a capella, barbershop, choral, doo-wop, gospel and more.
“America Sings” is an uplifting victory of voices celebration that will highlight North America’s most talented singing groups and the communities they are from.
The show will be hosted by multi-platinum recording artist Drew Lachey, a member of the 1990s pop music sensation 98 Degrees, and a former “Dancing with the Stars” winner.
GMC producers sought out The Guerrillas after viewing their performances on YouTube. The group was asked to record two new songs to be featured on the show: Kanye West’s “Heartless,” and “Walk the Dinosaur,” from the 1980s one-hit-wonder, Was Not Was. Video and audio for both songs were recorded on campus in Rosch Recital Hall earlier this semester.
The footage has been sent out to Los Angeles, where it will be edited for the actual episodes.

The Guerrillas music director Tony Scardace, a senior Music Business major from Lindenhurst, N.Y., was encouraged by his initial feedback from the show’s producers. “When they received our group’s footage, they said it was the most professional media they had received among all of the other groups on the show.”
Still, Scardace knows it all comes down to the group’s performance quality and their ability to generate votes. He hopes his fellow students and Fredonia community members will lend their support and vote early and often.
