Year of the DragonSUNY Fredonia’s Chinese Club invites the campus and community to celebrate the Year of the Dragon on Saturday, Feb. 18.  According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the celebration of the Year of the Dragon is observed in China between Monday, Jan. 23 and Monday, Feb. 6.  The dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese zodiac.

The dinner will take place in the Horizon Room of the Williams Center at 6 p.m. Students will be charged $5 and general admission will be $7.50. Chinese holiday traditional customs, such as dragon dancing and lion dancing, will be introduced in a presentation, and games and videos will be provided for entertainment..

The Chinese New Year, also known as Spring Festival in China, marks the end of the winter season. The festival begins on the first day of the first month in the traditional Chinese calendar and ends with the Lantern Festival which is on the 15th day. Since the Chinese lunar calendar determines the date of the festival, it falls on different dates each year in the Gregorian calendar.

The dragon is the fifth sign of the Chinese zodiac, which consists of 12 animal signs. It is a creature of myth and legend. In ancient China, the celestial dragon represents an emperor and power. Today, it is the ultimate auspicious symbol signifying success and fortune.

This event is sponsored by the Center of Multicultural Affairs and the Fredonia Student Association. The Chinese Club, acknowledged by the Fredonia Student Association, is a student organization established in 2008. It supports the cultural, social and friendship needs of Chinese students as well as promotes greater awareness and understanding of Chinese culture on Fredonia’s campus and in the larger community.
