Five from Fredonia picked as SUNYAC stars this week

Five student athletes from SUNY Fredonia were among the 12 recently selected by the SUNY Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) as Players of the Week. They are: Sarah Zureck (volleyball), Elizabeth Schake (swimming), John Rodman (diving), Reilly Condidorio (soccer), and Sarah Ficarro (diving).

Congratulations to these student-athletes and their coaches - Geoff Braun, Arthur Wang, Chris Case and John Crawford. 

Fredonia women's soccer advanced to the SUNYAC tournament semifinals this week, the volleyball team downed St. Lawrence, the University of Rochester, and NYU, and women's swimming won all but one event in their meet against Rochester Institute of Technology.

WOMEN’S SOCCER – Fredonia
  • Reilly Condidorio (LeRoy, NY/LeRoy), senior forward
Reilly Condidorio scored two game-winning goals and etched her name in the Fredonia State record book in several categories en route to being named the SUNYAC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the second time this season. Condidorio netted the game winner with less than five minutes to play in a 2-1 win against Rochester on Tuesday. In Saturday’s SUNYAC quarterfinal game, the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute when Condidorio’s pass was headed into the net. Brockport tied the game in the 62nd minute but then Fredonia was awarded a penalty kick a minute later in which Condidorio was successful for a 2-1 finial score. With the two goals and one assists on the week Condidorio became the program's all-time leader in career points (82), career goals (34), single-season points (32), and single-season goals (14).

VOLLEYBALL – Fredonia

  • Sarah Zureck (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary’s), senior Libero

Fredonia’s outstanding play on defense was a huge key to its success last week, and a lot of the credit goes to libero Sarah Zureck. The senior accumulated 101 digs, 10 aces, reached the 2,000 career dig milestone, and set a school record as Fredonia went 5-0 against regionally ranked opponents. For her performance, Zureck was named the SUNYAC Volleyball Player-of-the-Week.The Blue Devils big week began Tuesday with a 3-2 win over St. John Fisher. Sarah contributed to the victory with 20 digs. On the weekend, Fredonia competed in the Rochester Tournament and were declared co-champions with a perfect 4-0 record. Friday night Zureck totaled 34 digs as Fredonia defeated RIT and Brockport. The Blue Devils opened Saturday with a 3-0 sweep of St. Lawrence where Zureck picked up 15 digs and three service aces. Her three aces made her the Blue Devils’ all-time leader. Fredonia closed out the weekend with a thrilling 3-2 win over No. 3 NYU - Zureck had a huge impact with 32 digs and two service aces.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING – Fredonia

  • Elizabeth Schake (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili), junior

Junior Elizabeth Schake played a key role in the Blue Devils' 217-82 dual meet win Oct. 29 at Rochester Institute of Technology. Individually she won the 50-yard freestyle (:25.13) and the 100-yard freestyle (:55.84). Then she was also part of the winning 200-yard medley (1:56.95) and 200-yard freestyle relays (1:44.95).

WOMEN’S DIVING – Fredonia

  • Sarah Ficarro (Owego, NY/Owego), junior

For the second straight week, junior Sarah Ficarro (Owego, NY) has been named the SUNYAC women’s diver. She won both springboard diving events in Fredonia State's dual meet win at Rochester Institute of Technology. Scored 249.45 points off the 1-meter board and 272.10 points off the 3-meter board. Her 3-meter score provisionally qualified her for the NCAA championships.

MEN’S DIVING – Fredonia

  • John Rodman (Livonia, NY/Livonia), senior

Senior John Rodman won the 3-meter springboard diving with 245.40 points at the Blue Devils' dual meet against Rochester Institute of Technology. It was his first win of the 2011-12 season.
