Fredonia Chamber Singers to open convention

To open the Classical Guitar Convention in Columbus, Ga., October 10, the Fredonia Chamber Singers have been invited to perform with Guitar Professor James Piorkowski, under the direction of Dr. Donald P. Lang. The concert will be recorded and broadcast on public radio on October 12.

 

Professor Piorkowski will also perform selected works for solo guitar at all three benefit concerts. There will be a nominal admission to all three events to help support the Chamber Singers’ travel fund. The concerts will be offered:

  • Sunday, Oct, 1, at 7 p.m.; Most Precious Blood Church, 22 Prospect Street, Angola, NY.
  • Monday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall in Mason Hall on the SUNY Fredonia campus.
  • Friday Oct. 6, at 7:30 pm, St. Anthony of Padua R. C. Church, 160 Court Street, in Buffalo.

At the convention, the Chamber Singers will perform “The Greatest of These” a setting of the biblical text from First Corinthians, Chapter 13, commissioned and written especially for the group by Mr. Piorkowski, who will be accompanying them the performance.

The Chamber Singers will also perform “Romancero Gitano,” a seven movement setting of poems by Federico Garcia Lorca by composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Guitarist Adam Holzman will serve as accompanist for the Chamber Singers in the performance. The concert opens the week-long conference that will features music, lectures and lecture-recitals by some of the most renowned guitarists and other musicians from the U.S., Latin America, and Europe.

We will have the two-fold opportunity of performing before some of the finest musicians in the world, as well as performing with two truly outstanding guitar soloists. The musical and educational benefits this experience will provide for our students is enormous. It is also gratifying to know that the musical performance standards exemplified in all of our programs in the School of Music at Fredonia will be heard and recognized by an international audience of outstanding musicians.”
