Fredonia SIFE Team and Amnesty International to host music festival, Jamnesty 2009

All funds raised will go toward construction of a well for water in Africa

SUNY Fredonia’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team, in cooperation with Amnesty International, will be hosting a benefit concert called “Jamnesty 2009.” This event will be free and open to the public.

The daylong music festival is to be held on April 25 from noon to 8 p.m. at the Barker Common Gazebo on Temple Street and Main Street in Fredonia. It will feature 11 bands from the SUNY Fredonia collegiate community, including The Dirty Accident, Playing for Keeps, Anomaly, MoFaux, Brand New Genius, Judd Q in the Black Hole, Bogme... and Friends, Longitude, Frogbots, First Step Fall, Stop Drop and Roll, and Colors in the Air.

The event’s goal is to raise $500 to be used to build a well for fresh water for a community in Africa. Since the event is free, the money will be raised through food and beverage concessions, as well as donations collected throughout the day. The proceeds will go to Africare, the oldest and largest African-American-led U.S. organization that assists families and communities in over 25 countries in every major region of Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Jamnesty 2009 is going to be a really fun, full-day concert,” says senior business administration, marketing major and SIFE team member Robert Gregory. “It is also a great opportunity for SUNY Fredonia students and members of the community to help those in need.”

SIFE is an international network of student, academic and business leaders who have made a commitment to create a better world with better leaders — individuals who have the ability, and are willing to put forth the effort, to make a meaningful contribution to their communities, and work together to improve the lives of others.

Amnesty International is a Nobel Prize winning grassroots activist organization. Currently the organization has over 1.8 million members worldwide. It does research and takes action to prevent and end the abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.
