Marissa Carmello earns top honors at NYS speech and hearing conference

Marissa Carmello, a senior majoring in Communication Disorders and Sciences at SUNY Fredonia, won first place for her research poster, “Differences in Perceptual Measures of Nasality and Measured Nasalance in Native and Non-Native Western New Yorkers,” at the 52nd annual conference of the New York State Speech Language and Hearing Association.

The competition, held April 26-28 in Saratoga Springs, attracted entries from students at private and public institutions throughout the state.

In addition to the top award, Carmello also received a $1,500 scholarship. Dr. Bridget Russell served as Carmello’s mentor.

Carmello, of Dunkirk, is a graduate of Fredonia High School.
