Evan Kirshen, a dual Music major (Music Performance, with a concentration in trumpet, and Music Education), from East Northport, has been awarded a prestigious DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship to support his study abroad program at the Weimar Conservatory in Weimar, Germany, in the 2018-2019 academic year.

Administered by the German government to support exchange students in Germany, DAAD provides a monthly stipend to students to supplement living expenses. Additionally, the award will help fund personal travel to Germany and student expenses at the university.
Altogether, Mr. Kirshen’s scholarship is worth more than $10,000.

Studying in Germany will enable Kirshen to increase his knowledge of the German language, German trumpet playing and the German culture, while also furthering his research interests. “In the world of music, knowledge of the German language is very important. All musicians must have a basic understanding of German in order to play the music of German composers.

Besides English,” Kirshen noted, “German is the most used language when it comes to research publications, especially in musical academia.”

New DAAD scholarship applications for all study abroad experiences in Germany during the 2019-2020 academic year are due by Jan. 31, 2019. Students interested in applying for a DAAD scholarship may contact Fredonia’s Office of International Education.
