NewSound Festival focus is electronic music

The Ethos New Music Society at SUNY Fredonia presents the NewSound8 Music Festival, March 4 through 14 on campus. This year’s festival focuses on electronic music of the 20th and 21st centuries, and will feature appearances from up-and-coming composer Missy Mazzoli and electronic music pioneer Morton Subotnick.

NewSound 8 Schedule of Events:

  • Harvestworks: Hans Tammen and Zachary Seldess give a concert utilizing MAX/MSP interactive computer-based technologies. Tuesday, March 4, 8 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall; free. 
  • William Neil: presents the world premier of his new work for piano At the Edge of the Body’s Night. Wednesday, March 5, 8 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall; $3 students, $5 non-students (at door)
  • Albert Glinsky: presents a lecture on the history and science of the Theremin. Friday, March 7, 8 p.m., Diers Recital Hall; free.
  • Faculty/Student Concert: 20th and 21st century works with electronics. Sunday, March 9, 8 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall; free.
  • Missy Mazzoli: presents a lecture and performance of her works with SOM faculty members Kay Stonefelt and Tiffany Nicely. Tuesday, March 11, 8 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall; $3 students, $5 non-students (at door)
  • Stephen Taylor: presents his documentary film, The End of New Music. Discussion to follow. Wednesday, March 12, 8 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall; free.
  • Morton Subotnick: presents a lecture. Thursday, March 13, 8 p.m., Rosch Recital Hall; free.
  • Morton Subotnick and Sue Costabile: performs his works with light/visual artist Sue Costabile. Friday, March 14, 8 p.m. Rosch Recital Hall; $3 students, $5 non-students (at door).

Other ETHOS events this season include:

  • Fantasia: Original scores accompany diverse clips from film and television in this perennial favourite. Monday, March 17, 8 p.m. Rosch Recital Hall; free.
  • Past. Present. Future.: A celebration of current Fredonia composers alongside a guest alumni composer and featuring the winners of the Ethos Young Composers Competition. Monday, April 21, 8 p.m. Rosch Recital Hall; free.
