Renowned sculptor donates two original works

Christine Davis Mantai

Syracuse University Professor and renowned sculptor Lawson Smith recently donated “After the Tornado” and “Cycollage,” a pair of his original mixed media works, to the university's permanent collection. The gift came as a 16-day retrospective of the artist’s career, “Lawson Smith 1976-2006: Selected Works,” came to a conclusion at SUNY Fredonia’s Rockefeller Arts Center Art Gallery.

The two pieces are welcome additions to the campus, noted Art Gallery Administrator June Miller-Spann. “Since my appointment in 2003, I have spent countless hours with my students organizing and inventorying the university’s permanent art collection,” she said. “We are pleased to accept the two pieces by Lawson Smith. We want to continue to build the collection for research purposes, educational instruction and, it is my hope, to develop traveling exhibits and have our university recognized for its dedication to the arts.”

The next exhibition at the Rockefeller Arts Center Art Gallery will be “Artist By Number,” the first of two spring senior art exhibits. “Artist By Number” will open with a free public reception at the State University of New York at Fredonia on Friday, April 7 at 7 p.m. in the Rockefeller Arts Center Art Gallery Lobby.

“Artist By Number” will feature artwork from members of the SUNY Fredonia Department of Visual Arts and New Media Class of 2006 in such media as graphic design, painting, ceramics, painting, photography and drawing.

The exhibition is supported by The Department of Visual Arts and New Media, The Friends of Rockefeller Arts Center and The Rockefeller Arts Center Art Gallery.

Rockefeller Arts Center Art Gallery hours are Tuesday to Thursday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. For more information or to schedule a group visit outside of normal viewing hours, please contact Ms. Miller-Spann at 716-673-4897.
