Jessica Mykins, a senior in the technical production degree program in theatre arts, was one of 11 students from across the country who successfully completed an intensive stage management mentoring project at the U.S. Institute for Theatre Technology Annual Conference in Houston, Texas, March 18 through the 23.

She will present a poster describing her experience at the 10th annual Student Creativity and Research Exposition on Thursday, April 24 in the Williams Center from noon to 6 p.m.

Ms. Mykins was one of 11 students selected nationwide from 40, including graduate students in theatre, who applied to work alongside professionals responsible for in stage-managing events during the conference. Known for being a rigorous program, the mentorship required work days lasting 15 hours or more. She helped stage-manage such events as the opening keynote address, the new products showcase, and the costuming commission session--one of the most heavily-attended events.

SUNY Fredonia Theatre and Dance Chairperson Stephen E. Rees, who was her mentor and supervisor, noted, "Her efforts and those of her colleagues assured the smooth operation of these events that were critical to the success of the conference."

The experience will look good on her resume when she graduates from SUNY Fredonia in May with a B.F.A. in technical production. Her intention is to pursue a career in commercial entertainment after graduation. “At the conference, I worked with industry professionals who were always available to give a better understanding of stage management responsibilities and show how they relate to the professional world of entertainment," she said.

From Rochester, N.Y., Ms. Mykins is currently the Stage Manager for the Department of Theatre and Dance spring musical, "Victor/Victoria."

Professor Rees noted, "Jessica is the third Fredonia student I have known to have been selected for this coveted mentorship. Previous participants are now engaged as professional stage managers or are employed in arts management."

She traveled with funds provided by the Office of Student Creativity and Research (OSCAR)>
