Fredonia, N.Y. — May 22, 2008 — The annual Fredonia Woodwind Quintet Camp will be held from Sunday, July 6 through Saturday, July 12. It is open to students who play the flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon in grades 9-12 (including those that will be entering grade 9 this fall, as well as those who will have just graduated).

Set on the beautiful campus of SUNY Fredonia, the Quintet Camp is a friendly and relaxed setting for musical growth through the performance and study of chamber music.

The camp is committed to maintaining balanced instrumentation and a modest overall enrollment to ensure that each student has a substantial amount of instruction by SUNY Fredonia faculty. The camp takes advantage of the university’s first-rate facilities and world-class teachers.

The goal of the Fredonia Woodwind Quintet Camp is that all participants, by playing chamber music, learn to become increasingly independent, and yet work cooperatively with others to achieve a convincing musical performance. Led by the Fredonia Woodwind Quintet (FWQ), a faculty ensemble in residence within SUNY Fredonia’s School of Music, the camp seeks to create a supportive and enjoyable environment to advance the musical and personal growth of young musicians.

The members of the quintet are: Susan Royal, flute; Sarah Hamilton, oboe; James East, clarinet; Laura Koepke, bassoon; and Marc Guy, horn.

The FWQ's annual tours of New York have taken them across the state, playing community concerts and giving educational performances and workshops. The group has developed many imaginative educational programs for community organizations and public schools in partnership with the Arts Council for Chautauqua County’s “Arts-in-Education” program and the Western New York Institute for Arts-in-Education. In many cases, these programs have involved cooperative program development with classes in social studies, language arts and science, as well as music.

Camp registration is $650, which includes housing, meals, and a camp t-shirt. Commuters pay $350 (meals not included) or $510 (meals included). A limited number of scholarships are available on a need basis.
