SUNY Fredonia is committed to the safety and security of its students, faculty, staff and community. Therefore, the campus will be conducting periodic safety exercises which will enhance the campus response to potential emergencies.
2025 drill
Our campus will conduct a lockdown drill on Wednesday, September 10, at 10:15 a.m. This drill will test the campus emergency notification system and the manual locking devices of occupied classrooms, offices and other public spaces. Your participation in this exercise is requested to assist us in creating a safe and secure environment. The drill will last approximately 15 minutes and classroom activities can continue during the drill (more details below).
What is a lockdown drill?
A lockdown drill is a practice exercise to simulate an emergency response, such as an active shooter or dangerous situation on campus. Training drills, like lockdowns, help ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty, and staff during an emergency. It prepares individuals to respond quickly and effectively to secure themselves in a safe area and minimize potential harm.
How will the campus be notified of the drill?
The campus community will be notified of the drill via NYAlert through their cell phones, emails, or texts. If you have not already signed up for NY-Alert, please do so through this link.
What will happen on the day of the drill?
As mentioned above, a notification will be sent out to the entire campus via NYAlert to initiate the lockdown procedure. During the drill, preselected buildings will be inspected by members of the campus safety team. Doors will be manually checked to verify compliance. The campus safety team members will be identified by wearing reflective vests and may be seen walking through your building during the drill.
How do I lock my classroom or office?
Your classroom, office, dorm room, or other room should have a manual locking device on the inside, which should be activated. If you have a card swipe system, simply use your card to lock the door. Please take some time before the drill to verify that your classroom or office can be locked.
Responsibilities during the drill:
- Students
- In Residence Halls or individual dorm rooms: Students who are in residence hall rooms should remain there and manually lock their doors until the drill is over. If you are in the residence hall, but not in your room, you should immediately go to your room and lock the door until the drill is completed.
- Walking on campus, building hallways or public spaces: Students walking around campus or not already in a lockable room should immediately go to the nearest building on campus and find a room to lock behind them.
- While in class: Students should remain in the room and verify that the faculty member has manually locked the classroom door.
- Faculty / Staff Responsibilities:
- Faculty in class during drill: Upon notification of the drill, faculty members should immediately check the hallway for any persons needing a place to lock in and offer their classroom for shelter during the drill. Faculty should then manually lock the door to their classroom. They may continue to conduct their class as normal until the notification of the end of the drill is given. Faculty can then unlock the classroom and continue with their day.
- Staff and Faculty (not in class): Upon notification of the drill, faculty and/or staff should immediately check the hallway for anyone not yet sheltered in a room and offer them shelter during the drill. They should manually lock the door until the drill is complete.
A followup survey will be sent to campus after the event for feedback.
