Ken Olsen, '14
Where are you currently located, and what have you been up to since graduating from Fredonia?
I am currently employed with The Walt Disney Company as a Research Specialist—I moved down to Florida in mid-June of 2014.
How did you become interested in history as a major?
My interest in history was passed on to me by my father, who had a particular interest in Colonial and Revolutionary American History. It’s when I began pursuing History during my undergraduate career that I found my niche within Medieval History, as well as the histories of social movements within the United States (i.e. Civil Rights, Queer Rights, and Feminism).
How has the Department of History at Fredonia prepared you for your current/future career?
The faculty within the History department have taught me everything I know and have shaped me into the person I am today—for that I am entirely grateful. Their lessons have informed why historical, social, political, and economic events take place—simply beyond memorizing important dates and historical figures—and how much of an impact the changes made following those events impact future generations. These lessons are exactly what I use everyday at Disney. We collect valuable feedback from our Guests and fellow Cast Members to enhance experiences within our parks and resorts. One of the newest changes we have made from the research we have collected was the expansion of the Magic Kingdom Hub area, a prime location to view the fireworks every night. By expanding this area, we have created beautiful sceneries for our guests to enjoy while allowing them to access different areas of the park with ease. I plan on making a career with Disney, but would also love to receive a Master’s within Medieval History.
What advice do you have for incoming freshmen?
My advice to incoming freshmen—as well as current History students—would be this: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would work for Disney, let alone move to Florida, right after graduation. Keep pursuing your dreams, and never lose sight of them.
