Accounting students are offering free help this tax season
Free tax preparation is available for low-income, elderly and non-English speaking individuals and families thanks to the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) being offered by the e SUNY Fredonia Accounting Society, in conjunction with Chautauqua County Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition.
Developed by the Internal Revenue Service, VITA is conducted locally by 18 accounting and business majors from SUNY Fredonia who are volunteering their time and knowledge each Saturday during “tax season” from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Dunkirk Free Library until April 11. The library is located at 536 Central Avenue.
Using personal computers provided by the IRS and internet-access provided by the Dunkirk Free Library, the students are preparing and filing federal and state tax returns electronically for each client.
The SUNY Fredonia Accounting Society VITA program is part of a county-wide coalition coordinated by The United Way of Northern Chautauqua and the Chautauqua County Department of Social Services. For further information, contact Mary Meyer or Thomas Demmer by email.
