Visit by documentary filmmaker Byron Hurt to address gender issues in hip-hop culture

A unique look at hip-hop culture will be presented by activist and documentary filmmaker Byron Hurt during a talk and screening of his film, “Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes” on Tuesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. in Room 202 McEwen Hall. Among the scholars giving on-screen interviews during the film is Fredonia alumnus and author, Dr. Mark Anthony Neal, who teaches at Duke University.

Photographic artists explore practices of optical image making

The role of photography in contemporary art will be explored in an exhibit set to open at the main gallery of Rockefeller Arts Center at the State University of New York at Fredonia. Entitled “Lines Not Drawn: Contemporary photographic depictions, fictions and contradictions,” the exhibit will open with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7.

Theater day camp planned for area children

The SUNY Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance is producing a week-long day camp called “PLAYGROUND” to provide a campus-based cultural experience that reaches out to a small group of children in a unique way. The camp runs from Aug. 20 to Aug. 25.

Howard Hanna Holt Real Estate, with offices in Mayville and Fredonia and another scheduled to open soon in Westfield, will sponsor the 2007-08 Kaleidoscope Series at Rockefeller Arts Center

Chamber Singers plan Great Britain Tour

The Fredonia Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. Donald P. Lang, will launch their Great Britain Tour, a 17-day excursion that includes performances in historic churches and theatres in Wales and England, on Saturday, May 19. The tour will reunite Emma Hudson, a teacher, composer and music graduate of Oxford University, with Dr. Lang and the Chamber Singers. Ms. Hudson credits tri-annual visits by the Chamber Singers over the years and her brief study at a Fredonia Summer Choral program for her success in music. Ms. Hudson was just 2 years of age when she was introduced to the Chamber Singers.
