Welcome Week, full of activities and events for students, will be hosted by Spectrum Entertainment Board and sponsored by the Student Association. All events begin at 7 p.m. and are free. Themed, "Through the Decades," each event will be based around a specific decade; the 1970s, ʼ80s, ʼ90's, or 2000s.
Savannah King, a junior Music Industry major, is an up-and-coming artist in Western New York. By collaborating with other Fredonia students and dedicating herself to her personal Youtube project, King has begun to make a name for herself in the Buffalo music scene.
The number of School of Business Majors at Fredonia, including Accounting, are growing rapidly. Events such as “Meet the Accountants Night,” where students are recruited by professionals, are being implemented to further the School of Business and its students.
For teacher preparation programs, clinically rich experiences are encouraged. Education students at SUNY Fredonia are able to participate in field experiences before student teaching, helping them to be better prepared for their future as an educator.
Two SUNY Fredonia students earned high praise at the Buffalo/Toronto District division of the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council auditions, winning Encouragement Awards, and a third gained praise from the Buffalo News music critic, on Jan. 4 at Nichols School’s Flickinger Performing Arts Center in Buffalo.
The Keeper of the Dream Scholarship and Leadership Program has gained statewide acclaim, receiving the SUNY Outstanding Student Affairs Program Award in the multicultural/diversity category at the October meeting of the Council of Chief Student Affairs Officers and Office of University Life and Enrollment Management in Syracuse.
The public relations curriculum at SUNY Fredonia is now accepting applications for the 2014 Community Partners Program, in which students conduct research and develop comprehensive public relations plans, including the development of materials, for one or more nonprofit, community-based organizations. Participating organizations are given all materials at the end of the semester. The deadline for applying for the 2014 program is Friday, Jan. 24.
Computer Science majors Nicholas Freville and Adam Toth have assembled a Beowulf cluster, comprised of three tiny computers called Raspberry Pi’s, that work in tandem to solve complex problems. A Beowulf cluster is a parallel computing system achieved by linking normally identical, commodity-grade computers into a small local area network (LAN). The result gives a huge boost of power despite using inexpensive, personal computer hardware.
Dr. James Ivey of the Department of Theatre and Dance announced that the final day of the One-Act Play Festival one-act at SUNY Fredonia is tonight (Monday, Dec. 16) at 6 p.m.; rescheduled from Friday.
Samantha Jemiolo of Orchard Park, N.Y., has been named Student of the Month for November by the Office of Residence Life. She was nominated for the award by Mark Suida, assistant director of Campus Life and coordinator of the Leadership Studies minor, because of her “positive attitude and competence.”
