Student vocalists to be featured with Buffalo Philharmonic

Eight Fredonia student jazz vocalists have been given the rare opportunity to perform at the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Glorious Gershwin” concert as guests of featured artist and guest conductor Matt Catingub on Saturday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m., at Kleinhans Music Hall. The eight students were recruited based on their singing style, ability to master difficult musical arrangements and availability for rehearsals, noted Director of Jazz Studies Bruce Johnstone.

Woodstock music fest co-creator Kornfeld appears today

Artie Kornfeld, co-creator and promoter of the legendary Woodstock Music and Art Fair, will revisit the iconic counterculture festival on Monday, April 7, at 6 p.m. in McEwen Hall Room 202. The talk, presented courtesy of the Music Industry program and the generous support of DFT Communications and Waring Financial Group, free and open to the public...just like the original.

SUNY Fredonia's Wind Ensemble completing March tour

The SUNY Fredonia Wind Ensemble, which has delighted audiences on state, national and international tours since 1999, will perform at eight high schools throughout New York State during its spring tour. Evening concerts open to the public are scheduled at Pembroke High School on Monday, March 10, at 7 p.m.; West Genesee High School on Tuesday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m.; and Rondout High School, on Wednesday, March 12, at 7 p.m.

Westfield’s Patterson Library hosts intimate jazz concert with Bruce Johnstone

Saxophonist Bruce Johnstone, accompanied by SUNY Fredonia’s unique Carousel Strings, will present an intriguing combination of jazz standards and ballads, Latin jazz and even a few original pieces at an intimate concert on Saturday, March 1, at 3 p.m. at Patterson Library in Westfield.The concert is free and open to the public.

Wind Ensemble plans March tour

The Wind Ensemble at SUNY Fredonia, one of the School of Music’s premier ensembles, will perform in high schools across New York State during its spring tour. Buffalo, Brockport, Hilton, Schenectady and Guilderland Center are among destinations of the 44-student ensemble directed by Dr. Paula Holcomb.

NewSound festival to host music notables

As part of the annual NewSound Festival, SUNY Fredonia’s Ethos New Music Society will be presenting a concert with saxophonist Tim McAllister and composer Roshanne Etezady on Friday, Feb. 14, and an evening of discussion with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky on Monday, Feb. 17. Both events are in Rosch Recital Hall at 8 p.m., and admission is free and open to the public.
