Fredonia's Collin Mulcahy opened his final collegiate men's cross country season with a first-place finish at Saturday's Blue Devil Invitational. The Blue Devils were first in the team scoring with 30 points, 15 points ahead of Gannon.
The Fredonia women's tennis team opened the season with a 9-0 victory at D'Youville on Saturday morning. The doubles lineup featured the experienced senior duo of Chloe Cohen (West Hempstead/West Hempstead) and Halee Dickinson (Brockport/Brockport) at No. 2, who handled their challengers 8-1.
The 2016 Fredonia cross country season begins Saturday with the Blue Devil Invitational. Unlike past seasons, when the race was run at Lake Erie State Park, this year's Invitational will be run on the Fredonia campus. It's the only home meet of the season.
Cancer Awareness Day 2016 is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 10, as part of the annual Fredonia Blue Devil Classic. Held for the first time in 2015, Cancer Awareness Day is a joint venture between Blue Devil women's and men's soccer teams to raise awareness ̶ and donations ̶ about ovarian and prostate cancer.
Last season the women's basketball team had its most successful season ever, which included the team playing host to it's first-ever SUNYAC Tournament game, a thrilling 89-81 overtime victory over Brockport. The team finished 19-8 overall and returns most of its roster in tact. A very experienced senior class, four juniors and a trio of outstanding sophomores, could put the Devils right back in the mix this season.
A new round of public ice skating classes will begin during the first week of October at Steele Hall Ice Arena. The first session, held on Sundays at 1 p.m. and Tuesdays at 6:15 p.m., will begin Oct. 2. The Figure Skating Club will meet on Sundays, also beginning on Oct. 2, from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m.
United in competition, three Fredonia Blue Devil track and field members are now united in their classroom achievement. Brittany Feldman (Jamestown/Southwestern) and Laura Morrison (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) of the women's team, and Collin Mulcahy (Batavia/Batavia) of the men's team have received All-Academic awards from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Fredonia women's tennis team defeated over Oswego, 7-2, on Saturday at the Steele Hall Courts. In their longest played match of the season, the Blue Devils started the day with doubles wins at one and two.
The semester is but one month old and already members of Fredonia's athletics teams have been making a difference in the Dunkirk-Fredonia community through service projects.
