Fredonia student paper wins award at professional workshop

A paper by Fredonia student Basar Koc, co-authored with his mentor Professor of Computer and Information Science Ziya Arnavut, won the "Best Paper Award" at the WNY Image Processing Workshop held at the University of Rochester recently. The workshop is a venue to promote image processing research in the region and to facilitate interaction between academic researchers, industry researchers, and students.

The paper was titled, "Block-sorting Transformations with Pseudo-distance Technique for Lossless Compression of Color-mapped Images."  

According to Department Chairperson Renata Barneva, who also attended the conference, all other student presenters at the conference were doctoral program students, and Fredonia's program made a strong impression thanks to Koc's and Arnavut's collaboration. "A professor from the University of Rochester approached me and asked me whether Basar or some of the other students from Fredonia would be interested in a doctoral program at the University of Rochester," she said.

Koc is a dual degree student between Ege University in Turkey and SUNY Fredonia who has achieved several scholarly distinctions. He will graduate this May.

He has finished his thesis work under the supervision of computer and information sciences professor Dr. Ziya Arnuvat and is taking advanced courses. From his thesis work, he has already successfully published and presented a conference paper at the 6th IEEE International Conference on System of Systems Engineering (SOSE) in Albuquerque, New Mexico this past June.

Ege University and SUNY Fredonia have Dual Diploma agreements in two majors: computer sciences and international relations. The programs allow students to experience two distinctively different cultures, which prepares them well for work in a multicultural environment and to function effectively in an international arena.
