The first Faculty Recital of the 2008-09 academic year features vocalist Lynne McMurtry, mezzo-soprano, on Saturday, Sept. 13, at 8 p.m. in Rosch Recital Hall. Pianist Alison d'Amato will accompany her. The performance is free and open to the public.

The program includes: 3 Songs on texts by Alberto Donaudy by Stefano Donaudy; The Confession Stone by Robert Fleming; Selections from Ho: 5 vocalises for female voice by Giacinto Scelsi; Recuerdo by John Musto; Bostschaft by Johannes Brahms; Andres Maienlied by Felix Mendelssohn; and Storchenbotschaft by Hugo Wolf.

Described as “a force of nature” (Toronto Star) and “an actress of immense talent” (Opera Canada), mezzo-soprano McMurtry is a visiting assistant professor of voice. She has performed with the Boston Symphony, the Winnipeg Symphony, the Edmonton Symphony, Opera Ontario, Edmonton Opera and Manitoba Opera, and at many of the major festivals. Lynne is an active recitalist and has sung at many distinguished song venues, including Tanglewood, Ravinia, and the Vancouver International Song Institute, where she collaborated with renowned pianist Margo Garrett.

Her recital with pianist Alison d’Amato exploring settings of the poetry of Walt Whitman earned her a rave review in the Toronto Star, which stated that “Art doesn’t get any more moving than this.” She is a avid proponent of contemporary music and has sung numerous premiers, some of which have been broadcast on CBC Radio.

Praised as “supple” by the New York Times and “an expert pianist” by Boston Globe critic Richard Dyer, d'Amato is a visiting assistant professor of music at SUNY Buffalo. She has built a reputation as a dynamic, innovative, and versatile musician. Equally committed to solo, vocal, and instrumental chamber music, she has been a valued member of several pioneering organizations and ensembles. Since 2003, Alison has been an Artistic Co-Director of the Florestan Recital Project, a unique group devoted to the research and performance of song.
