SUNY NY-ALERT FAQs
 

Members of the Fredonia campus community are urged to sign up for NY-Alert, a secure, web-based emergency alert system implemented on campus and created and maintained by SUNY Administration and the New York State Emergency Management Office. 

Alerting students, faculty, and staff to safety concerns

It is the primary (although one of many) emergency notification tools used to send information regarding serious safety issues to the entire campus community in response to any event or situation which causes a serious safety concern. Trained, authorized personnel on the campus will be able to warn students, faculty and staff who have signed-up to the system of an impending emergency, and provide timely and ongoing information to protect lives and minimize campus disruption. 

NY-Alert is a major component of the mass communication system which we use during an emergency, and is the only alert system which will send messages directly to students, faculty and staff without having to be logged into email.

Text, email, voice or fax messages

NY-Alert is capable of sending text, e-mail, and recorded voice messages to multiple addresses and phone numbers that persons provide to the system. Participation is widely encouraged but completely voluntary. It is provided at no cost (with the exception of any charges assessed by a person’s wireless service provider), and only a single e-mail address is required to participate. If you sign up for multiple contact methods (fax, e-mail, text, or phone), please understand that you may receive only one contact message, as the goal of NY- Alert is to make at least one contact.
 

Instructions for Students

1. Go to the Fredonia home page

2. Click on the Your Connection link (found in the upper right under the envelope icon)

3. Log in with your Fred ID# or Social Security Number and Password

4. Click on the “Personal Information” link on the Main Menu

5. Click on the last option on the Personal Information menu, “Emergency Alert Contact Information (NY-Alert)”

6. a. If you have not previously registered for the NY-Alert system, you will be given two choices. Click the first option, “I would like to register for this service now and receive any alerts sent to the campus community.” Then click CONTINUE. 

i. Enter an e-mail address to receive NY-Alert messages, then click CONTINUE.

ii. Enter phone numbers to receive text, voice, and/or fax messages, then click CONTINUE.

iii. Confirm the information by clicking, “Register me with NY-Alert,” located at the bottom. You should then see the confirmation: "You have successfully registered for SUNY NY-Alert."

6. b. If you have already signed up for NY-Alert and need to update your information, you will be given three choices. Click the second option, "I would like to continue with the NY-Alert System but I need to alter the displayed contact information," then click CONTINUE. Review your information and make changes as needed.

 

Instructions for Faculty and Staff:

1. Go to the SUNY home page

2. Click on System.SUNY.edu in the top right corner

3. Click on SUNY Blue Login in the top right-hand column. It then may ask you to select “Fredonia” from the drop-down menu and then sign on using your Fredonia User ID and Password. If you are already logged in, it will take you right to the SUNY Blue page.

4. Click on SUNY Emergency Alert System in the right-hand column of the SUNY Blue page.

5. Complete the form as indicated; it will ask for your name, affiliation (employee, student or other) campus, e-mail address(es), telephone numbers (with area code) for voice and text messaging, text messaging provider, and fax number (if applicable).
**When inserting telephone numbers, don’t use dashes to separate numbers.

6. Then click Submit at the bottom of the form, which will take you to another form to review, and then click Confirm. You will receive a message that your entry was submitted successfully to the SUNY Emergency Alert System.

If your contact information changes in the future; simply log into the site again and make the appropriate changes.

If you would like to discontinue receiving Fredonia NY-Alert messages:

Students should log into Your Connection and click on the Personal Information link. Then click on the last option on the menu, Emergency Alert Contact Information (NY-Alert). Chose the third option, "I am not interested in participating in this service. I understand that safety alerts from the system would not be sent to me," then click CONTINUE.

Faculty/staff should email fredonia.nyalert@fredonia.edu, putting "Unsubscribe" in the heading.

Apology for Malfunctioning Emergency Notification System

Dear Fredonia Community Members, I am sorry for the annoyance and alarm caused Thursday afternoon and evening by the malfunctioning of the campus emergency mass notification system. The Simplex system was installed in 2011 to provide essential communication in the case of an emergency. If there were a dangerous natural event (such as a tornado) or a criminal event (such as an active shooter), the system would be used to ensure safety. The alarm you heard yesterday would sound for a few seconds to get attention, followed by a voice message about the emergency and the specific steps people should take to be safe. It is loud enough that those who live near the campus would also be alerted about a danger in the area. Fortunately, we have never yet had to use this system, but knowing we have this capability is an important part of our emergency preparedness. This kind of malfunction—with the siren sounding continuously—has never occurred before, and finding a way to turn off the siren took a while, as you know if you and your family members were awakened by the sound and wondered when it would end. A team of experts from the campus and the manufacturer are working today to make sure this does not happen again. The Fredonia community is a good neighbor to the campus, and I am committed to having us be a good neighbor as well. Virginia Horvath President

University policy for weather-related cancellations and closings

University policy on extraordinary weather requires that normal operations continue to the extent possible. Essential services (i.e.: Facilities Services, University Services, Residence Life, Campus Life, Environmental Health and Safety, University Police, and Food and Health Services) must be maintained in spite of severe weather. When cancellation of classes has been declared, the President will notify the Department of Marketing and Communications to facilitate announcements via the campus' emergency messaging channels (NY-Alert, listserv email, website, etc.) and on radio and TV stations across Western New York, if appropriate. Fredonia's policy states that employees designated as Essential Service will report to work at scheduled start times and perform normal and customary duties in the event of an emergency, including but not limited to weather, power outage, etc. To learn more, visit policy.fredonia.edu.
