Eden woman and Fredonia alumna honored at National Philanthropy Day

'63 graduate creates scholarship, meets first recipient
Robert Caruso, who spent nearly three decades in higher education at the University of California at Los Angeles, took the long flight back to his Dunkirk roots and alma mater, SUNY Fredonia, to meet Amanda Straight, the first recipient of a Caruso Memorial Scholarship. “I’ve always felt that Fredonia was a special kind of institution, both on a personal level and on a professional level,” he said. He created the scholarship endowment through the Fredonia College Foundation as a memorial to his parents, Mary B. and Joseph A. Caruso.
Alumni christen Marvel lobby in memory of great teacher
A half-century after the death of beloved teacher Dr. Georgiana von Tornow, alumni returned to christen the lobby of the 400-seat Marvel Theatre in memory of the former speech and drama teacher who is considered the founder of SUNY Fredonia's theatre arts program. In addition to financial gifts for a new scholarship and lobby naming, alumni also donated photographs, newspaper clippings and other memorabilia from their theatre experiences with Dr. von Tornow. Those items have been mounted in two large books that can be viewed at the Alumni House.
Back in Mason, more music to John Poppo's ears
John Poppo, a Sound Recording Technology (SRT) major and founder of Pop Productions in Manhattan, was honored Saturday, Oct. 18 in a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the SUNY Fredonia SRT program. School of Music Director Karl Boelter began the ceremony at the Juliet J. Rosch Recital Hall and SUNY Fredonia President Dennis Hefner presented Poppo with the award. “I’m not exaggerating in the least when I tell you that everything I’ve earned, all of the successes I’ve enjoyed throughout my career, I can trace back to what I learned right here at Fredonia,” Poppo said during his acceptance speech. Dec. 21: Ribbon Cutting of Fredonia Business Technology Incubator
The brand new SUNY Fredonia Business Technology Incubator will officially open on Dec. 21 with a grand opening ceremony at 11 a.m.
Emily VanDette receives grant for poetry program
Emily VanDette (English) has received a $1,500 grant from the COPC Service Learning Incentive program to support her interest in benefiting the Dunkirk community through a poetry correspondence program. The goal of the COPC awards program is to create sustainable, cooperative efforts that benefit the City of Dunkirk by tapping the abundant resources of SUNY Fredonia.
Holiday break and campus shutdown
With the exception of a few offices, college buildings will be closed, and heat reduced, beginning on the close of business Wednesday, Dec. 24, and will reopen on Monday, Jan. 5, 2009. Employees will be asked to use their leave credits, but those who choose to work may do so.
Talk to Santa available over cable channel
The live television call-in show “Talk to Santa” will be presented on Dec. 16, 17 and 18, beginning at 6:30 p.m. each evening, on Time Warner Ch. 5 in Brocton, Cassadaga, Fredonia and Stockton, and Ch. 19 in Dunkirk, Silver Creek, Forestville and Hanover. For the three nights, children and their families can tune in watch Santa and his assistant, Elf Holly.
‘Christmas Carol’ proceeds given to Jensen scholarship
The Dec. 6 matinee of “A Christmas Carol” raised $3,025.75 for the Tim Jensen Class of 1990 Scholarship fund. In the spirit of the Christmas season, the Department of Theatre and Dance at the State University of New York at Fredonia donated the proceeds from its Saturday matinee in memory of a former student and visiting artist.
