FREDONIA, N.Y. — January 16, 2008 — Adriane Blewitt, a cancer survivor and Olympic track and field trial competitor, will speak at SUNY Fredonia on Friday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in Steele Hall. She is scheduled to compete during the annual Mary Phillips Invitational hosted by the Blue Devils track and field teams on Saturday, Jan. 24.
Check out the local off-campus merchants who accept the FREDCard for purchases, and learn more about the FREDFunds account program at the first FREDFunds Merchant Fair on Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room. The Faculty Student Association is hosting the event. All faculty, staff, and students are eligible for the FREDFunds program and are encouraged to visit the fair and learn more about it.
An Opening Ceremony dinner to launch Black History Month will be held Monday, Feb. 2, at 5 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Williams Center. The event will be hosted by the Black Student Union. All students and faculty members are invited and encouraged to attend. BSU President Jasmine Ranjitsingh announced that many events are being planned for the month.
Hilary Demske, lecturer in Music, was the grand prize winner of a contest, conducted by Academic Affairs at SUNY Fredonia, to encourage use of The New York Times as an instructional resource. She was awarded $250 by the newspaper. Also, faculty members Dixon Reynolds, Kathryn Moore and Dr. Natalie Gerber gained honorable mention in the contest.
SUNY Fredonia will present a lecture-performance with Dr. Jessica Hillman, award-winning assistant professor within the Department of Theatre and Dance, together with several SUNY Fredonia students, at noon on Wed., Feb. 4, in Room S104 of the Williams Center.

Caring, funny, passionate, and a woman of conviction are a few words that describe Phyllis Willson of Eden, N.Y., who was honored at the National Philanthropy Day Luncheon in Buffalo, N.Y., in November 2008. A graduate of the Fredonia Normal School Class of 1939, Mrs. Willson was nominated by SUNY Fredonia for the honor. She was described as "an exemplary alumna, donor and friend of the university."
SUNY Fredonia has once again been ranked by Kiplinger Personal Finance magazine as one of the 100 best values in public higher education in the nation. The university was rated 77th for in-state residents, and 48th for out-of-state students.
