“Once Upon a Decade: Tales of the Fifties,” a new book written by Dr. Clark Zlotchew, professor of Modern Languages and Literatures and Distinguished Teaching Professor at SUNY Fredonia, has been selected as one of three finalists in the 2011 Next Generation Indie Book Awards.
SUNY Fredonia Sociology Professor Linda Dorsten will be among the representatives from 10 U.S. colleges and universities in China this week, hoping to increase the number of partnerships between Chinese higher education institutions and those in the U.S.
Neil Feit of the Department of Philosophy is the recipient of the Kasling Award for the academic year 2011-'12. The award recognizes a faculty member’s outstanding achievement in scholarship or artistic performance. Dr. Feit will deliver the Kasling Memorial Lecture this fall on October 18, 2011, 4 p.m., at Rosch Recital Hall. The Hagan Award will go to young scholar Dr. Kate Mahoney, who teaches in the TESOL program and studies best practices for teaching children who are learning English while in school.
Student achievement takes the spotlight at the annual Research & Creativity Expo, a talent showcase featuring some 350 students drawn from virtually all academic disciplines across the SUNY Fredonia campus, on Thursday, April 28, from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Williams Center. Alumnus Dr. Matthew Hurtgen (right) will give the keynote talk, “The Chemical Evolution of Earth’s Atmosphere and Oceans,” at 4:15 p.m.
Dr. Kim L. Tillery, Professor in Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences (CDS), delivered three separate three-hour presentations in Sweden, sponsored by Kreativvision, during Spring Break. She presented data on the proper diagnosis and coexistence of central auditory processing and nonverbal learning disorders.
Aimee Nezhukumatathil's essay, "Birth Geographic," has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize. It appears in the journal, Water-Stone. Her poem, "From the Ghost-Fish Postcards" has been published in the February 2011 issue of American Poetry Review. New works by the poet also appear in Sou'Wester, Crab Orchard Review, and Orion.
SUNY Fredonia is holding its fourth and final Social Science Colloquium of the semester with Professor Richard Jankowski from the Department of Political Science. He will give a presentation titled, “Who Guards the Guardians: The Life-Cycle Earnings of Citizen Candidates.” The event will take place on Wednesday, April 27 at noon in room E-122 of Thompson Hall. It is free and open to the public. Pizza and beverages will be provided.
